Shake weight

Just this past week my son was in my studio hanging out with me. At three years old he’s a little limited with what he can lift. He picked up  a 3 pound dumbbell put it up in front of him with both hands and began to shake it up and down. And I’m thinking to myself, “oh my God, he’s doing the shake  weight commercial.” Many different nonsensical  pieces of exercise equipment has graced our TVs televisions over the last couple of decades, but there are few more nonsensical and sillier than the shake weight.

It I love the fact that they have come up with the nebulous term “dynamic inertia.” Does anybody know what that means?  Dynamic means “of or relating to energy or objects in motion.” Inertia means “the tendency of a body to preserve its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force.”  so we can summarize dynamic inertia as placing something in motion and keeping it in motion. This opens up to questions. First, do you need this particular apparatus to do that? And what does that have to do with looking like the model in the commercial?

The answers to those questions are respectively “no” and “nothing!” You see, this is just another gimmick. This is another way for clever marketers to convince people that  results can come quick and easy. I love the little  graph and animations they utilize to demonstrate how this thing can generate greater attention and resistance than regular conventional exercise. I have yet to find third-party research to verify this as the case. To tell you the truth, I haven’t looked that hard. Why! Because I don’t think it really matters. I know what this thing is. It’s been inexpensively produce piece of equipment that has captured the imaginations of people looking for a quick fix. For this reason you can find it in popular sporting good stores, department stores, vitamin and nutrition shops, and I even saw them in Walgreens this past week.

So obviously this thing must be making headway if it has permeated so many different distribution channels. It’s another way to make a short-term fitness  buck. It will have its time and then it will be gone.  Soon it’ll be in the basement with the other fitness equipment that made big promises and didn’t work. If you already have one then don’t let me stop you from shaking away. Even if it doesn’t tone your arms and legs like the models in the commercial at least it can provide you with some NC-17 rated amusement.

In the meantime here is my plight. Here I am a veteran fitness professional with the sun that thinks you’re supposed to pick up dumbbells and shake them. I guess I have my work cut out for me. I hope he doesn’t throw a tantrum when I tell him that 6 minutes a day won’t cut it.

Holiday Pounds

A recent study showed that the average American puts on 8 lbs during the holiday season.

It makes sense. When Halloween arrives must of us begin with eating candy. This rolls right into Thanksgiving and slides into Christmas season and of course New Years.

Here’s some ways to beat those holiday pounds.

  1. Keep a commitment to an exercise program
  2. Join a boot camp program
  3. Start keeping a journal of what you eat
  4. Plan your eating to accommodate your social commitments
  5. Find an accountability partner
  6. Set a weight goal and put it in writing
  7. Purchase a great outfit that you have to get into shape for
  8. Empty all the junk food from your refrigerator and cabinets
  9. Hire a qualified trainer to assist you in creating you exercise plan
  10. Decide not to go shopping when you are hungry
  11. Create a collection of motivational music
  12. Pick a great a motivational book to read
  13. Choose some great motivational movies to watch (Rocky, Rudy, Men of honor, GI Jane, Forrest Gump etc)

Prevent Swine Flu

Swine_Flu_Spreads_sm

There is so much talk about swine flu. The media will make you think that you’d better not leave your house or else swine will jump on you in some cold dark alley.

I’m no medical expert so I will limit my comments. However, I do believe that the media’s job is to keep us (the public) off-balance, afraid and unfocused on our goals. In any event, the swine flu is a real threat. In recognition of this fact I want to share some great information for you and your family on how you can stay safe and away from swine flu.

Take your clothes off

This post is actually a call to get those
clothes off your home exercise equipment.
It’s cliche’ to use home equipment as clothes
racks. I am looking to start a campaign for
people to begin taking their clothes off and start
start using their treadmill, stationary bikes and
pull up bars for what they were designed for.
Join me in taking your clothes off.

Leave a comment letting me know about your experience.

Looking for motivation

motivationI am working on a presentation on passion and motivation for next week. I was kind of reaching for ideas when an old friend reached out to me for some words of encouragement on how to get started  back with her exercise plan. She had a goal of running a half marathon. She completed but can’t find it in herself to get started again. Here is what I wrote to her. Maybe it will help you. Read more…

A shot in the butt

steroid-injections-1We are living in an interesting time. There are now words in the American vocabulary like “Enron”, “Tyco”, “Performance Enhancement drug”, “Bernie Madoff” and the list goes on and on. It makes me wonder if anything is real anymore. You see a guy or girl driving a beautiful car and you wonder was that obtained from corporate buy out money that left stock holders losing their life’s savings. If you see someone with a terrific physique was that the result of chemical enhancement. It makes me wonder. Read more…

Is it genes or habbits?

I am often mystified by the phenomenon of the human mind. We all have the ability to rationalize things to ourselves. I know that I have done so on occasion. Maybe it’s part of being human. One of the most powerful things you can do is tell yourself the truth. If a situation is messed up, it is ok to say that it is messed up. You have to see situations as they are. However, you also have to see them as you want them to be. The cartoon in this post is a perfect example. The guy is complaining about the “fat gene” as he wolfs down a table full of burgers. He is not being truthful. Whether it is weight loss, finances, relationships career, it doesn’t matter. Do yourself a favor by telling yourself the truth. Then claim your power by envisioning how you want it to be. Next, go out and doing something to change it.
